Description
In Greek mythology, Priapus is a rustic minor god of fertility, both vegetation and all animals related to agricultural life, and a purely phallic character. He was worshiped as the protector of the flocks of goats and sheep, of bees, of wine, of the produce of the garden, and even of fishing.
Priapus was usually represented with a huge phallus in perpetual erection or in a phallic position, symbol of the fecundating force of nature. The Romans used to place in their gardens statues of Priapus, with a huge erect phallus, carrying fruit in their clothes and a sickle or a cornucopia in their hand. Its function was to guarantee an abundant harvest. Priapus removed the evil eye and his statue protected the orchards of thieves.
